What kind of karate is this? Chun Kuk Dotm, translated means "The
Universal Way". You're probably not as familiar with this style as Tae
Kwon Do or Jiu-jitsu, but you probably know it's founder,
Chuck Norris. As
martial arts systems go, Chun Kuk Dotm is very young, but has an age old
foundation. Essentially, as the translation implies, it is a culmination
of the techniques and philosophies Mr. Norris has been exposed to as being
effective and beneficial to a well rounded martial artist. Chun Kuk Dotm
has it's own unique solid foundation of basics with roots in Tang Soo Do,
but as the student progresses it provides a platform to build upon and
including Brazilian Jui-jitsu, self-defense, weapons and more.
It seems every karate school claims they are tied to some famous
martial artist or know someone personally, are you really associated with
Chuck Norris? Yes. We are an official
United Fighting Arts Federationtm
(UFAF) School teaching the style he founded, Chun Kuk Dotm. All of our
Black
Belt Instructors are UFAF members in good standing and have received their
black belt certificate signed by Mr. Norris personally. Mr. Brown is an
active member on Chuck Norris' Team Chun Kuk Do, is a Regional Board
member for Region 8(North Eastern US and Canada) Black Belt Testing and
serves as a member of the UFAF Advisory Board to Mr. Norris.
Do you have separate classes for kids and adults? Yes. We realize
that children, teens and adults all require different methods of teaching
for them to get the most out of their classes. When students are placed in
a specific class, consideration is also given to age, size and ability to
ensure their experience at Top Form is fun, safe and challenging for their
ability level.
How old do you start teaching kids? Our Lil' Dragon's program is for
kid's ages 4-6, our Blue Dragons program is for kid's ages 7-9, and we recommend around
9-10 years
or older for Chun Kuk Dotm. Most kids younger than that are lacking the
attention span needed for the regular karate class or do not yet understand the
responsibility of learning some of the techniques in martial arts.
Who teaches the classes? All classes are conducted under the
supervision of certified black belt instructors. There are also red belt
student instructors that assist in teaching as a requirement of their
training for black belt. Our style emphasizes the importance of being able
to teach as well as perform the technique.
How do I know my child or I will not get injured? Like any contact
sport, there is no way to insure injuries will never occur. However, all
students are watched carefully by instructors to minimize the chance of
injury. Students are required to wear protective equipment at all times
when free sparring and contact for lower ranks is limited to the
mid-section (stomach / chest, nothing below the belt or to the back) and
light contact to the side and top of the head (no face contact). Any
students not following these guidelines or not controlling their
techniques will be dealt with promptly. Our number one goal is to make the
training a fun experience and keep it safe.
Are students pushed to attend tournaments? Absolutely not.
Tournaments can be a valuable experience in your martial arts training,
but they are not for everyone. If students are interested in attending
tournaments, they will have the full support of the studio and instructors
to help them prepare but they will never be pushed to attend. Our
instructors are the most qualified in the tri-state area in tournament
competition. Mr. Brown is a member of Chuck Norris' Team CKD and has
competed nationally in the NBL (National Black Belt League) in fighting,
weapons and kata taking 5th in the NBL World Games in Fighting. Mr.
Brown and Mr. Shaffer are consistently ranked in the top 3 in individual
and team fighting at the Chun Kuk Do World Championship in Las Vegas,
NV.
What does it mean to get a black belt in Chun Kuk Dotm? Achieving a
black belt in Chun Kuk Dotm
is something to be very proud of and can never
be taken away. To receive a black belt in our system, students must have
satisfied time and training requirements at the studio level and then will
have the opportunity to go before a UFAF Regional Testing Board and test
for the rank of 1st degree black belt. There are currently only 3000 Chun
Kuk Dotm
Black Belts under Mr. Norris in the world. So, can anyone get a
black belt in this style? Yes, but it will require a lot of hard work,
dedication and the proper attitude to achieve it.
What other classes / services do you offer? Aside from the main
karate program (Chun Kuk Dotm), we also offer Women's Self Defense Classes.
There is a complete pro shop for all your training equipment needs. Finally, for all your aerobic
and conditioning needs,
we also offer Tae-Bo® fitness classes taught by instructors
certified by Billy Blanks® personally at the Tae Bo®
World Training Center in Los Angeles, CA.
